Division of Urology - Education Programs

Postgraduate Education

Our Urology Residency Program is a fully accredited five-year program. The ratio of residents to faculty in our program is 1:1, and first-time success at the Royal College Principles of Surgery and Final Specialty Certification Examinations is above the national average.

The first two years of training are core surgery. The first year (PGY-1) consists of 13 four-week rotations. Mandatory rotations include 12 weeks of urology and eight weeks of general surgery. Most of the remaining 32 weeks are elective and structured to the individual’s needs. The second year of training (PGY-2) is the general surgical year, consisting of six months of general surgery, three months of vascular surgery and three months of surgical ICU. The final three years of training (PGY-3 to PGY-5) are in urology. Rotations are at The Ottawa Hospital and at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO), and usually include three to six months of paediatric urology.

Resident research is mandatory, and research-in-progress days are held twice a year at which time residents present their ideas and work-to-date. Residents are also encouraged to make presentations at the annual Department of Surgery Research Day (Collins Surgical Day) as well as at national and international meetings.
