Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program
The University of Ottawa Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program provides a very strong broad-based training. Through the two teaching hospitals with which we are affiliated – The Ottawa Hospital and the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario – we perform large volumes of adult reconstructive orthopaedic surgeries, paediatric orthopaedic surgeries, trauma surgeries, sports medicine and spine surgeries, among others. In addition, we stress the importance of resident research throughout the training program.
The residency program consists of five years of graded training. In the first year (PGY-1) the principal goals are to give the resident orthopaedic experience in both campuses of the teaching hospital (Civic Campus and General Campus) and to provide a broad-based clinical year. There are 13 four-week blocks: six blocks of orthopaedic surgery, two blocks of internal medicine, 1 block of physical medicine and rehabilitation, 3 blocks of general surgery, and 1 block of emergency medicine. The second year (PGY-2) comprises 7 blocks of orthopaedic surgery, 2 blocks of neurosurgery, 2 blocks of plastic surgery and 2 blocks of ICU (intensive care unit). In third year (PGY-3) there are 10 blocks of orthopaedics, two blocks of pathology and one block of research. The final two years (PGY-4 and PGY-5) are dedicated to orthopaedic surgery. Rotations include 9 months of paediatric orthopaedic surgery. One rotation is also provided for dedicated pathology instruction and for protected research time. In addition, a two-month approved orthopaedic elective is required in PGY-3 or PGY-4.
