Division of Neurosurgery - Education Programs

Postgraduate Education

Neurosurgery Residency Program
The strengths of our Neurosurgery Residency Program include its large and varied patient population, our faculty’s subspecializations, a relatively small number of residents (seven) and close interaction between faculty and residents (including an established mentorship program). There is a very favourable faculty-to-resident ratio with five adult and two paediatric neurosurgeons responsible for the training of seven residents. Our program has always been fully accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

The first two years (PGY-1 and PGY-2) of our Neurosurgery Residency consist of core surgery training according to the requirements of the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada. The first year of core training includes a broad base of clinical experience to facilitate success at the Q5 examination of the Medical Council of Canada. It includes eight weeks of general medicine; four weeks of family medicine or paediatrics; four weeks of emergency medicine, obstetrics/gynaecology or psychiatry; twelve weeks of general surgery; twelve weeks of orthopaedic surgery; and twelve weeks of plastic surgery, paediatric surgery, vascular surgery or ear, nose and throat surgery (ENT). In addition, during the second year (PGY-2), there are six months of clinical neurosurgery; three months of surgical ICU and three months of neurology.

From the third through the sixth years of the residency (PGY-3 to PGY-6, inclusive), there are thirty months of clinical neurosurgery and eighteen months of clinical neurosciences which may include basic or clinical research, neuropathology, neuroradiology, or specialty neurosurgery.

Our Neurosurgery Residency Program is custom tailored to the individual needs of each resident. For some, the program may be constructed with a major emphasis on developing academic skills in teaching and research in order to facilitate access to an academic career. For others whose objective is community neurosurgery, the emphasis will be on excellence in clinical practice. Additional training in specific areas of neurosurgery such as paediatric neurosurgery, stereotaxis, radiosurgery and spinal instrumentation may be integrated into the individual programs. Spinal neurosurgery is integrated into the University of Ottawa Spine Program (adult and paediatric).

Application Information

Application to the Neurosurgery Residency Program must be made through the Canadian Resident Matching Service (CaRMS). You will also find more detailed information about our residency program on the CaRMS site.

Fellowship in Paediatric Neurosurgery

The University of Ottawa’s Division of Neurosurgery offers a Fellowship in Paediatric Neurosurgery. The goal of this clinical fellowship is to provide comprehensive training in the field of paediatric neurosurgery with specific emphasis on the treatment of hydrocephalus, spinal dysraphism, cranial remodelation for craniosynostosis, skull-base surgery, epilepsy surgery, ultrasound and image-guided surgery (with the Zeiss SMN/STN System). Training is also provided in microsurgery, neuroendoscopy, deep-seated brain tumors, vascular malformations, functional neurosurgery for the relief of spasticity and intracranial pressure monitoring.

The fellowship is structured and intended to provide continuous medical education experience for practising qualified neurosurgeons who wish to expand their skills in this particular field or become fully devoted to the practice of paediatric neurosurgery. Fellows are responsible for: emergencies and elective admission of patients to the neurosurgical unit; pre- and post-operative care of neurosurgical patients; as well as assisting in the operating room under direct supervision of the attending neurosurgical staff. Outpatient neurosurgical clinics are also under the direct supervision of the attending staff. Depending on the number of personnel available in the Division of Neurosurgery, fellows are usually expected to be on-call every other night, or more often if they so desire, in order to gain maximum experience during their period of training.

Fellows are actively involved in the teaching of both postgraduate and undergraduate students on rotation at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO). This involves bedside and classroom teaching including lectures and seminars. Fellows will be required to develop new, and participate in ongoing, clinical and basic research projects both at CHEO and at the University of Ottawa. Basic research facilities available to fellows are located at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario Research Institute. Fellows are expected to devote full-time activity to paediatric neurosurgery, and for educational reasons are not allowed to engage in clinical or research activities outside of CHEO and the University of Ottawa.

Paediatric neurosurgical fellows are appointed for periods of one or two years. Shorter periods (6 months) of training are also available. Candidates are required to obtain a medical license to practice medicine in the province of Ontario. Fellows are paid a salary commensurate with their level of experience, and are given three weeks vacation / convention leave, per year. The position is open to graduates of neurosurgery training programs in Canada and the U.S.A. Candidates from other countries will be considered depending upon their qualifications.
