Welcome to PHGARO

Public Health Genomics Applied Research Ottawa
Public Health Genomics Applied Research Ottawa (PHGARO) is a group of researchers, students and staff working on the evaluation of the potential value of genomic information in public health and disease prevention. We consider “genomics” in the broad sense as including family history, germline genetic variations, genomic markers of persistent infection, and epigenetic changes. Work is ongoing on applications such as newborn screening and chronic disease prevention. The aspects of evaluation include public and professional engagement to determine acceptability, systematic overview of effects of genetic variation on health, quantitative evaluations of genetic test characteristics, and new investigations of genomic risk factors.
