Objectives:

To familiarize the student with the diagnosis and management of acute and chronic sports related injuries.

Description:

The University of Ottawa Sports Medicine & Physiotherapy Centre offers the student a wide variety of experiences in the diagnosis and management of both acute and chronic sports injuries, osteoarthritis and other arthritic conditions. This clinic is staffed by sports medicine physicians with their diploma in Sports Medicine and also by physicians in Emergency Medicine, Orthopaedic Surgery and Physiatry. The clinic caters to non-athletes and to a full range of athletes from the recreational to the highly competitive. The clientele includes patients of all ages. Patients are not necessarily limited to university students. There is an on-site physiotherapy facility within the clinic. Students will have the opportunity to cover university level sports and possible professional, and semi-professional sports with the supervisors.

Sports Medicine

Objectives:

To teach the student the basics of musculo-skeletal physical examination. To outline the basic treatment plan for common sports injuries. This would include physical therapy modalities, bracing, orthotics and surgical treatment.

Description:
The student will spend the day in the clinic setting, where the techniques of physical examination will be presented.
Treatment for common musculo-skeletal sports injuries will be outlined, including physical therapy modalities. Physiotherapy is immediately adjacent to the Clinic. Conservative treatment, such as bracing and orthotics will also be discussed, as well as the surgical treatment of common athletics injuries, such as arthroscopy and ligament reconstruction. The student will have an opportunity to observe surgical treatment at the Ottawa Civic Hospital under Dr. Johnson's supervision, and will also be able to participate in monthly sports medicine rounds held at the Clinic as well as orthopedic rounds discussion at the Ottawa Civic Hospital.
