Radiology
Introduction to Diagnostic Imaging / Radiological Sciences
The Division of Radiology recognizes two distinct levels of training in the undergraduate student group.
First and Second Year Students:
- Y1 & Y2 observatory elective requests must be submitted to Avril D’Silva at the Diagnostic Imaging Undergraduate Education office by email (adsilva@ottawahospital.on.ca), informing the area(s) of interest, date/time period involved and preceptor choice.
- Ms. D’Silva will then contact the supervisor of the subspecialty the student has chosen, to see if there is space/preceptor available for the student at the desired date/time period.
- Once approval for the elective has been received, Ms. D’Silva will contact the student by email to confirm the placement. The student should then contact the supervisor for reporting details.
- Student will have the elective preceptor fill out the Y1 & Y2 Observatory Elective Evaluation Form and hand it back to Ms. D’Silva at the end of the placement.
- The Undergraduate Education Director will review the internal evaluations and fill out the uOttawa Pre-Clerkship Elective form.
- A photocopy of the form is kept on file in the department and the original is sent to the Electives Coordinator at the University of Ottawa.
Objectives for 3rd Year Students:
Please refer to the 3rd Year Clerkship Website.
Objectives for 4th Year Students:
- To gain a basic understanding of how to look at images; .
- To gain an insight into the cost effective use of imaging resources in patient diagnosis and treatment;
- To understand what patients experience during radiological procedures.
- To gain insight into the practice of radiatiology as a possible career alternative.
Description:
The two week elective is designed for 4th year students. During this period, students will spend time at either the Ottawa Hospital General or Civic campuses. The emphasis is on small group learning and includes seminars, didactic teaching, attendance at departmental and interdepartmental rounds, attendance at special examinations and procedures and case discussions. There is exposure to all modalities including Ultrasound, C.T., M.R.I., Neuro, ER/MSK, Chest, GI, Nuclear Medicine and Interventional Radiology.
There is exposure to ALL diagnostic imaging modalities including: Ultrasound, CT, MRI, Neuro, ER/MSK, Chest, GI and Interventional Radiology.
Audiovisual materials and the medical student teaching file are also available for reference.
Undergraduate Director, Diagnostic Imaging: Dr. R. Peterson
Radiation Oncology
Clinical Radiation Oncology
Objectives:
To introduce the student to a multidisciplinary cancer care setting, with an emphasis on the role of radiotherapy in the curative management of cancer.
Description:
To introduce the student to the multidisciplinary approach to cancer care in a variety of tumour sites. Students will be involved in outpatient clinics only. They will become familiar with the staging and investigation of cancer and cancer-related problems, including intra-operative assessments and procedures. In addition, they will have the opportunity to be introduced to the "behind the scenes" treatment planning, simulation, and delivery of curative radiotherapy.
Director: Dr. Choan E
Location: The Ottawa Hospital Cancer Centre
Duration: any duration to a maximum of 4 weeks
No. of Students: 2
Available for: 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th years
Molecular Biology Cancer
Objectives:
To wet the appetite of students for basic research by exposing them to some aspects of basic research in cancer.
Description:
Through exposure to molecular biological techniques at the bench, research seminars, meetings and patient clinics, students will be given an overview of the field. One afternoon per week will be spent in the outpatient clinic, the remaining, 4 ½ days will be spent in the laboratory. The student will acquire a working knowledge of the common oncogenes and tumour suppressor genes identified as important in the pathogenesis of lung and colon cancer.
