University of Ottawa Students:

Visiting Medical Students:
Application must be submitted through the Electives Coordinator at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Ottawa. For further assistance please contact elective@uottawa.ca.
Pre-requisite: Students must have completed their Core Obs/Gyn Rotation to attend an Obs/Gyn elective in Ottawa.
Students will be offered 2 week assignments which can be divided between sub-specialties. Requests for longer attachments will be entertained depending on space availability.
Important note: Any elective application not routed though the above mechanism, e.g. direct approach to Physician’s, can result in double-booking and may be declined.Perinatology
Objectives:
To learn how to assess risk in pregnancy, how to provide antenatal care to high risk patients and work in a multidisciplinary team;
To come in contact with different types of deliveries that may be required in some situations, i.e. classical Cesarean Sections;
Exposure to obstetrical ultrasound, prenatal diagnosis and anomaly scans;
To learn about fetal assessment;
To sit in on counselling sessions.

Gynecology/Oncology
Objectives:
Understand principles underlying the diagnosis and treatment of:
- Genital tract preinvasive disease
- Cancer of the vulva
- Cancer of the cervix
- Cancer of the endometrium
- Cancer of the ovary
Understand principles of perioperative and palliative care specific to the gynecologic oncology patient;
Appreciate the multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of gynecologic cancers;
Develop an appreciation for bioethical issues relevant to the cancer patient.

Reproductive Endocrinology & Infertility
Objectives:
To understand:
- The processes of Gametogenesis in men and women;
- The processes of fertilization and pre-embryo development;
- Clinical approaches to treatment of infertility.
Description:
Each student will be expected to do background reading on the processes involved in in-vitro fertilization (IVF) from both the basic sciences and clinical therapy. Reading will include background understanding of the clinical conditions (including pathophysiology) that leads couples to IVF. The experience will involve exposure to the laboratory and clinical activities used, as well as the counselling and assessment of these couples. The student will be expected to provide a written report at the end of the elective of his/her understanding of the processes involved. The student will be graded as satisfactory or unsatisfactory.

Labour and Delivery
Objectives:
Obstetrical experience accompanied by hands on skills in delivery. Students will work with the nursing staff and residents. Call shifts are 24 hour periods.
