Guided Readings and Discussion in the History of Medicine

Objectives:

To acquaint students with significant recent publications and concerns of historians of medicine in order to raise their consciousness of the role of history in understanding health, disease, and medical institutions.

Description:

Several significant recent publications dealing with themes in the history of health, disease, or medical institutions will be designated for reading by all members of the elective group. Regular meetings will discuss and critically evaluate the readings. Particular attention will be given to the current significance of the issues raised by the historical works. Each student will be required to lead a session and prepare one brief written essay review. Specific themes available for selection include: medical ethics: abortion, euthanasia, genetic engineering; diseases and public health: epidemics, venereal disease, chronic and geriatric ailments; psychiatry and psychoanalysis; hospitals; anti-medicine, the patient's perspective; the rise of the modern medical profession; medieval medical education; sex and medicine; women and medicine; birth, etc. Readings may be in French or English.

Independent Research in the History of Medicine

Objectives:

To provide medical students with opportunities and guidance for original research in the history of medicine.

Description:

Introduction to basic resources and methods of research in the history of medicine. After introductory lectures, each student will design and undertake an independent research project on a subject of his/her choice. Regular consultations with the advisor will be geared to the writing, editing, and perhaps, publication of the research. Projects may be in French or English. Interested students should contact the instructor well in advance of the elective period, preferably during their second or third year.
