Visiting Medical Students enrolled in a LCME accredited Canadian Medical Schools
Thank you for your interest in the Electives Program at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Ottawa, Ottawa, Ontario.
A complete application must include the following documents:

- Complete one form per requested elective.
- Choose up to three (3) electives from the Electives Table of Content on the left of this page - Electives in Anglophone Settings, and indicate them on the application with your choice of dates (maximum 8 weeks of elective allowed in one academic year).
- Once the application form has been completed by you and your Dean, mail it to the Electives Coordinator.
- Note that elective applications will be processed 4 months prior to the requested dates. Exception: For Dermatology, we will accept to process your application 6-8 months in advance. If one of the above documents is missing, your application will not be processed. - The reason for this policy is to be able to meet the immunization requirements of the Public Hospitals Act, to allow timely registration of visiting medical students, and to avoid last minute cancellations, which deny another student an elective opportunity.

- Even if you submit a copy of your home school record, you must also include the UofO form with your signature for authorization for disclosure of information. Failure to submit a complete immunization form with your application may result in a refusal of your application)
- Include a photocopy of your home school student card
- Please note that you will need to present your student card to the hospital department upon your arrival
- If home school is unable to confirm that student has an up to date Police Record Check on file, students must provide proof of a Police Records Check for Service With the Vulnerable Sector dated within 12 months of the start of the elective to confirm that there are no criminal convictions, no outstanding charges and that the person has not been involved in any police incidents related to the five year address history provided by the person.
- The original document is required. Note: If your home school is able to confirm this either via email or by signing off page 3 of our application form, that is also acceptable
- Payment guidelines: The Elective fee is 150$ per elective. Please do NOT send any money or cheque. Once your elective application is received, you will be asked to make your payment online.
- A Notice of Receipt will be emailed to you including guidelines on how to proceed.
- Note: The application fee is an administrative fee and is NON-REFUNDABLE even in the event an elective placement is not found or if you choose to decline an elective that has been secured for you.

Please carefully read the Terms & Conditions for Visiting Medical Students enrolled in a LCME accredited Canadian Medical School.
- Once your elective application is received, a Notice of Receipt will be emailed to you.
- Once your elective has been approved, a Confirmation of Elective will be emailed to you by the Electives Coordinator. You will be asked to promptly reply to the Electives Coordinator, whether you accept or refuse the elective.
- Please select your elective carefully as SWITCHING or CANCELLING electives once they are booked is strongly discouraged. Once confirmed, if it is absolutely necessary to cancel an elective, you must notify the Electives Coordinator by email at least 6 weeks before the start of the elective. Failure to adhere to the above policies will be considered a breach of professionalism and may be reported to the Director of Electives for follow up.
- Visiting Medical Students MUST NOT contact the departments nor the hospital coordinators directly to reserve a time for an elective.
- Please note that because of the very high number of applications we receive, we CANNOT inquire about availabilities until we receive your complete application.
- Visiting students must be in their second last or final academic year (example: 2nd or 3rd year student in a 3 year program at Clerkship level or a 3rd or 4th year student in a 4 year program) with previous preclinical experience and in good standing, also registered in an L.C.M.E. approved medical school.
- The application form must indicate the specific dates of the elective from the beginning to the end (Monday to Friday).
- Medical students of the University of Ottawa have first priority for the electives offered in our catalogue.
- Elective space will be extremely limited between August 13, 2012 and August 31, 2012 due to the large amount U of Ottawa students who will be starting their clerkship during that period.
- Christmas time electives are not recommended due to the holidays, and the hospital shut-downs (December 24, 2012 to January 4, 2013).
- There is no financial remuneration to students for electives.
- Applicants must receive academic credit from their school for the elective(s) taken at the University of Ottawa, Faculty of Medicine or its affiliated hospitals.
- Student will uphold and protect patient confidentiality and dignity at all times, both in the presence and absence of the patient or family, in all communications including medical records, discussions, history taking, and physical examinations.
- Insurance coverage for the above noted student is provided by the student’s home school:
1) Comprehensive General Liability with the limit per occurrence of five million dollars (Canadian funds).
2) Professional Liability Insurance covering the student for malpractice, negligence, errors and omissions for a limit of five million dollars (Canadian funds). - U of Ottawa does not provide parking privileges to visiting medical students. Applicants must make their own arrangements:
