What to do in Case of an Emergency

Emergency number 5411

All University telephones have this extension preprogrammed, and identified as Emergency-Urgence. Protection Services will immediately send an officer and will contact the appropriate emergency services:

  • Paramedic
  • Fire Department of Ottawa
  • Police Department of Ottawa

Protection Services are available 24 hours a day. At the Faculty of Medicine, the officer on duty is located at office RGN 2013-A.

Do not call 911! Use extension 5411 only for situations when emergency assistance is required. For other Protection Services inquiries dial 5499.

In case of an actual fire or fire alarm

GENERAL DIRECTIVE TO ALL OCCUPANTS OF ROGER-GUINDON HALL

If you DISCOVER a fire:

  • REMAIN CALM and leave the danger area
  • DO NOT enter a smoke-filled room
  • Close all doors on the way out
  • Sound the alarm (pull the nearest manual fire alarm device)
  • Call Protection Services at extension 5411
  • Use the nearest safe exit and proceed either to the gathering area in Parking Lot H or to the grass slope south of the building
  • DO NOT use the elevators

If your HEAR the building fire alarm:

  • Turn off electrical equipment and extinguish all open flames
  • Touch the door before opening
    • If the handle is hot, stay where you are and call protection Services at extension 5411 and let them know where you are locate
      - Close the door and block any openings with a damp cloth or towel
    • If it is not, leave the building by the nearest safe exit, closing all doors behind you and then proceed to the nearest gathering area in Parking Lot H or to the grass slope south of the building
  • DO NOT use the elevators
  • DO NOT enter a smoke-filled corridor; it may be safer to remain where you are

It is against the law to remain within the building during a Fire Alarm event. 

Obey all instructions given by staff in White or Yellow Hats until the ALL CLEAR has been issued and any emergency vehicles have departed. 

Infrastructure problems

Any non-urgent problems related to building maintenance should be reported to MedFacility

All maintenance emergencies should be directed to extension 2222 or to emergency number 5411, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. A maintenance emergency is a situation where the condition of buildings, grounds or vehicles can affect the safety of users or can create a dangerous situation. Examples of maintenance's principal functions:

  • Heating, ventilation and air-conditioning
  • Electricity and plumbing
  • Campus roads
  • Traffic signs
  • Housekeeping
  • Maintenance of grounds (icy conditions)
  • Transportation

Accident, incident or occupational disease form

The form must be completed when an employee is injured in the workplace, when an incident or accident could have resulted in the employee being injured, when an employee reports having an occupational illness and when there are accidents or incidents involving chemicals spills, exposures to biological agents or radioactive substances, and spills or accidental emissions.
