Biographical Sketch:

David Mack attended undergraduate the University of Ottawa and University of Toronto (M.D., 1983) followed by Pediatric Residency training at the University of Ottawa and University of Toronto (FRCPC) and Pediatric Gastroenterology Fellowship at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. Following 10 years at the University of Nebraska College of Medicine, Dr. Mack was appointed as a professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Ottawa and is currently Head of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology & Nutrition at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario

Research Interests:

Intestinal Mucosal Protection
The lumen of the intestinal tract contains many noxious substances and potential pathogens. To help protect the host from potential deleterious consequences, there is an intricate set of interactions between these substances and organisms with the non-immune and immune elements of the intestinal mucosa. The non-immune mechanisms have been the area of basic research that has been of interest in our laboratory studies. Our studies have included the evaluation of epithelial cell derived compounds such as ileo-colonic mucins, apoptosis and probiotic organisms.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease
Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis represent one of the most serious non-curable conditions that afflict children and adolescents. A number of collaborative projects involving the study of children and adolescents are underway and include the study mechanisms whereby the bone health of children with these conditions may be affected, genetic and environmental factors and modifying factors of their disease.
