Research Interests:
Research in my laboratory aims at understanding the regulation of expression of the enzyme cyclooxygenase. Cyclooxygenase, also named prostaglandin endoperoxide H synthase (PGHS), catalyses the rate limiting step in the synthesis of prostanoids from arachidonic acid. The importance of this enzyme has been revealed by Aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents (NSAIDs) used in a wide variety of clinical contexts for the treatment of pain, fever and inflammation. Aspirin and other NSAIDs inhibit the enzyme PGHS leading to an inhibition in the formation of prostanoids. Three levels of expression of PGHS-1 gene are currently studied in my laboratory. First, regulation at the transcriptional level and regulatory elements in the promoter are identified. Second, regulation at the level of the transcript and RNA processing is studied. And thirdly, regulation at the level protein synthesis and protein stability is studied.
