Research
Our approximately one hundred members conduct research at the molecular and informatics level over a broad area of the life sciences. Their work is enhanced through collaborations with scientists in the affiliated teaching hospitals, research institutes and government agencies in the Ottawa area. Twenty six professors are located in the core Department at the Faculty of Medicine, others are cross appointees from Faculty of Medicine Clinical Departments or adjuncts from government institutes. Significant expansions of the Faculty of Medicine (100,000 ft² ) and of the adjacent institutes are in progress.
Graduate Teaching
The BMI Department offers graduate programs leading to the degrees of Master of Science (M.Sc.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in either Biochemistry or Microbiology and Immunology. A specialization in Human and Molecular Genetics is possible. There are about 190 graduate students in our graduate programs.
Undergraduate Teaching
The Department offers Biochemistry B.Sc. degrees in the Faculty of Science in both official languages. About eight hundred students are enrolled in our undergraduate program. A new undergraduate laboratory building, the Biosciences Complex, was occupied in 2005. The program can be combined with Chemical Engineering as a Biotechnology option that gives two degrees after five years of study (a B.Sc. in Biochemistry and a B.A.Sc. in Chemical Engineering).
Our members teach undergraduate medical students in both English and in French in the Faculty of Medicine. Our M.D. program is PBL based (problem-based learning). Our members also teach microbiology in the Nursing program at the Faculty of Health Sciences.
