Electives

Electives for Canadian / Permanent Residents

The majority of University of Ottawa Residency programs provide Elective opportunities to Residents currently registered in another Canadian or American University. Residents must complete the Elective Registration form (this form is available in a fillable Microsoft Word format, or Adobe Acrobat PDF format) and submit directly to desired program via regular mail or fax transmission. This form must be submitted at least three months prior to the start date along with the Entry Immunization Record for all New Trainees Form.  Failure to comply will result in a delay/cancellation of the elective.  Absolutely no exceptions will be made. Once approved at the program level, the form will be submitted to the University Postgraduate Office for faculty level approval.

In addition to completing and submitting the Elective Registration form, residents from Ontario must include a copy of an active CPSO Certificate of registration and an active CMPA membership card.

In addition to completing and submitting the Elective Registration form, residents registered outside of Ontario must obtain an Educational certificate of registration from CPSO as well as a CMPA membership.

In addition to completing the Elective Registration form, American residents must also provide a copy of an American Birth certificate or Citizenship card.

Please note that all forms and documents must be submitted to the PGME office 3 months prior to desired start date.

Electives for Foreign Residents

Electives can be offered to foreign residents currently registered in a postgraduate program outside North America. Eligibility is dictated by the CPSO and described in the document entitled Electives for International Residents: CPSO Registration Requirements. Foreign residents must complete the University of Ottawa Elective Registration Form for International Residents and submit it to the University of Ottawa PGME Office along with the following documents:

  • CV
  • Copy of the Medical Degree from an acceptable Medical School , with English/French translation (if applicable)
  • Copy of the Medical School Transcripts, with English/French translation
  • Letter from the Program Director (or authorized equivalent) from the school of origin, testifying to the level of training and the abilities of the trainee.

Electives for foreign residents start with a two-week miminum Pre-entry Assessment Program (PEAP). During the PEAP, the resident must hold a PEAP certificate of registration from the CPSO. Upon successful completion of the PEAP, the PEAP certificate automatically converts to a regular Postgraduate Education certificate for the remainder of the Elective. If the PEAP is not completed successfully, the Elective appointment period immediately terminates. The duration of the Elective appointment, including the PEAP, must not exceed six months.

Besides having to obtain an Educational Certificate of Registration from the CPSO, Foreign Residents must obtain CMPA coverage and also apply for a work permit to be entitled to work in Canada. This process can take up to six months. The PGME Office will provide a Human Resources and Skills Development Canada Labour Market Opinion to apply for the work permit.

Please note that all forms and documents must be submitted to the PGME office 3 months prior to desired start date.

Electives in Rural Ontario

The Rural Ontario Medical Program is funded by the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care in Ontario.  We offer undergraduates and postgraduates from all Ontario Medical Schools education opportunities with community physicians across rural Ontario.  ROMP provides medical learners with one on one learning and exposure to community medicine and the unique lifestyle that it offers.  We also work with community physician recruiters to assist in recruitment and retention strategies in rural and underserviced areas.
